About Us

We provide essential groceries and support to our neighbors at risk of hunger through a collaboration of local churches and the broader community.

An engaged community where the nutritional needs of all our neighbors are met.

Our Story

In 1979, a youth group at Grace Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn put their faith into action to help their neighbors at risk of hunger. That spirit inspired the mission of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry and, more than 40 years later, the need for our services is greater than ever.

Today, the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is an ecumenical endeavor of 14 Glen Ellyn churches collaborating with the community and “making hunger history” in central DuPage County, Ill.  We serve 12 communities:  Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Villa Park, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Winfield.

In 2020, we had over 14,139 client visits, serving 5,470 individuals, many whom we saw every month. We distributed 761,000 pounds of food - that translates to 634,000 meals at a cost to us of about 10 cents a meal. How can we do so much with so little?  In addition to the financial contributions received from our supportive donors, a large percentage of what we provide is groceries donated through incredibly generous community food drives. The Pantry also receives produce, meat, frozen foods, and baked goods recovered from local grocery stores. We augment donations with purchases from the Northern Illinois Food Bank at a significant discount over retail prices.

We are passionate about helping those experiencing food insecurity … passionate about making sure those who are facing challenging times receive proper nutrition … passionate about ensuring children have access to healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner so they can do their best at school … and passionate about carrying out God’s work in our community with kindness and respect.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is a registered 501(c)(3) organization 100% privately funded through donations and grants. We have a Platinum rating on GuideStar, its newest and highest level of recognition. Remarkably, 94 cents of every dollar goes directly to client services. We operate a budget that maintains only a 6% overhead, compared to 25% average spent by other nonprofits. Our work is possible thanks to a dedicated staff, more than 400 volunteers, an active board of directors and partners in the community.
