GEFP Reopens August 1, 2016

Reopening

The remodeling is complete and the shelves are restocked. The Pantry is set to reopen Monday, August 1, 2016! The Pantry Board and Staff are grateful for the financial donations from our supporters that made the remodeling possible and for the food donations from our community, churches, and retail partners that restocked the Pantry shelves. We are excited to reengage in a more efficient way with our mission to feed our hungry neighbors. The additional storage space will allow us to take better advantage of food recovery, donation, and purchasing opportunities to stretch donation dollars further. The new layout of our client shopping area will accommodate more clients per day and respond to the growing demand for food assistance. Volunteers, we’ve missed you this summer, and look forward to seeing all of you in August!

Dylan Bockelman’s Eagle Scout Project

Huge KUDOS to Dylan Bockelman for organizing the collection of food and raised funds for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry’s re-opening in August! Dylan did an amazing job canvasing the community, distributing bags, picking up donations, sorting, labeling, and delivering the entire donation to the Food Pantry with a team of helpers. Dylan’s collection of more than 310 boxes of food (2500 pounds!) and almost $3,000 was a tremendous individual effort for which the Food Pantry Staff and Board of Directors is very grateful! Your efforts are a great impact to stocking our shelves for the opening on August 1st!

Thank You, Dylan … you made an incredible difference to the lives of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity, providing enough food to distribute 2,100 meals in the community!

Jewel Restocks the Pantry

Early this morning Jewel delivered a semi-truck full of food to stock our newly remodeled Pantry! Glen Ellyn Food Pantry Board and Staff are overwhelmed by Jewel’s generosity. We are grateful the volunteers who unloaded the truck and stocked the Pantry shelves. Thank you also to the Northern Illinois Food Bank for their support and our friends at Einstein’s for the delicious coffee and food for our volunteers. Everything is on track for re-opening in August.

Volunteer Appreciation

Today the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry Board and Staff members celebrated our wonderful Volunteers at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. We simply could not do without them! We rely on our volunteers to pick up Food Recovery from local retailers, sort fresh produce, put away food donations on Pantry shelves, bag clients groceries and so much more. If you have a couple of hours to spare each month and would like to join or volunteers, please fill out our Volunteer Information Form.

Superhero of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry

imageMeet Patrick O’Leary (aka the Incredible Hulk), one of the many superheroes who volunteer their awesome time and talents to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. A resident of Glen Ellyn for 46 years, Pat began volunteering at the Food Pantry in 2004, but his volunteering efforts began in Glen Ellyn in 1969 for HOPE, Inc. rehabbing homes. If he could be a superhero, he would be the Incredible Hulk … and he uses his HULK like powers to unload food and stock cases at the food pantry (plus GREEN is his favorite color).

Throughout his years of volunteering, his favorite and most memorable experience was an 8 year old girl donating her birthday presents. She had asked for food donations from her friends instead of traditional party gifts. Pat was particularly touched when this young girl asked when she could start to volunteer for the Food Pantry. Pat has also noticed the incredible growth of our local food pantry and the amount of food including meats, produce and bakery items donated from local businesses and the Northern Illinois Food Bank through the years.

Hulk Hero Fun Facts

Top Favorite Things at the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry
• Feeding HIS children (literally)
• Seeing our clients treated with the utmost respect and patience.
• Working with so many wonderful people, staff, volunteers, clients and donors.

Favorite Food:
• Chocolate (ANYTHING)

What has changed about GE?
• So many more BIG houses and so many people needing a hand up.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry would not be the thriving metropolis it is without volunteers like Pat O’Leary and his SUPERHERO efforts. Thank You!

What SUPERHERO power do you possess within and how do you use it to be grateful and give back?!
