How our new home came about...
The needs of our community had outgrown the space available to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry at Grace Lutheran Church, the Pantry's first and only home. To address the issues of food security in our community, the Pantry needed more space to sort, package and distribute food.
In 2019, we were gifted with the 100-year-old parsonage owned by Faith Lutheran Church, at 55 N. Park Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. The new location will provide dedicated space to serve neighbors at risk of hunger, with a location closer to the Roosevelt Road corridor and public transportation. The Pantry began a campaign that year to raise funds for the required renovation, including upgrades to make the building compliant with the American Disabilities Act. By March 2021, we accomplished our goal of raising $900,000.
The Village of Glen Ellyn Board of Trustees unanimously approved building plans for the transformation of the Pantry’s new home at its February 2021 meeting, and approved all building permits in September 2021. The building continues to look like a residential home from the street but has been renovated to provide access on the side and back of the house, along with other modifications and improvements.
GreenLight Construction Group of West Chicago, with three generations of experience, was selected to do the construction which was completed in August 2023. The completed project features 5,609 square feet of space including a two-story warehouse which replaced the current two-car garage and is fully compliant with the American Disabilities Act.
How you can help
Although the Capital Campaign is complete, your donation to the Pantry’s general operating fund will help stock our new home with groceries and support the development of new programs and services to help our neighbors at risk of hunger. The DONATE NOW button is featured on every page of this website or use the button to the right.
The Pantry is also in need of in-kind donations for our new home. Do you or a friend or family member work for a company that might be able to donate materials or offer expert services at a discount? Please email director@GlenEllynFoodPantry.org and let us know! Examples of key items we’ll need:
- Office supplies (printer ink, paper)
- Brown paper shopping bags WITH handles
